A stunning performance by Mendip’s First team - West Wilts. 1 Mendip Ladies Hockey Firsts 2

By Leah Smith in Hockey

Mendip stunned high-flying West Wilts. on Saturday with a last gasp winner to take all three points in this fiercely-contested encounter.

The away side started well, taking the game to their opponents and setting a fast tempo. After a period of determined attacking play, Charlene Vranch showed typical perseverance to slot home a rebound and put Mendip ahead.

Wilts. found an immediate reply, with a neatly taken goal from a penalty corner.

The second half was fairly even, with both teams working hard. Mendip’s best chances came when Player of the Match, Hayley Young, linked the defence and attack, holding the ball up well and setting forwards, Amy McGowan and Jasmine Scott, free. Wilts. came close to a winner late on, but left back, Cherilyn Carey, was well positioned to clear a penalty corner strike off the line.

From the ensuing attack, Mendip broke quickly and Scott pounced on a loose ball in the D to score and seal victory for the visitors.

This Saturday, Mendip face Devizes at Norton Hill (1.30 p.m).
