Activities in the Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club have been overshadowed with the news of the death of this year’s appointed Captain and Treasurer, John Appleton. John made an enormous contribution to the Seniors’ section and will be much missed. His wife, Ann and family are all being thought of at this sad time.
Away victories are elusive for the Seniors’ section and so there was great delight in a 3.5–2.5 victory away to Brean in the first leg of the FossewayBrean trophy. Captain, Gerry Rowell and Vice-Captain, Martyn Cuer, halved the opening encounter, but there was a 3&2 win for Mike Ricketts and Bob Smith, a 2&1 victory for Nick Foxwell and Frank Reeves, while Terry Button and Howard Nowell finished two up. Cyril Blacker and Allen Cheney finished two down and John Bendle and Graham Edgell were defeated 3&2.
There was an even more convincing success in the home match against Shortwood Lodge, with a 4.5–1.5 win. Rowell and his partner, Alan Jones, opened with a 3&1 win, Ricketts and Pete Fitch won 5&4, Cheney and Smith triumphed 4&3 while Blacker and Geoff Hallett finished one up. Bendle and Reeves halved their encounter and the only pair to lose were Cuer and Button, who were defeated 3&2.
Fosseway gave the strong Burnham and Berrow Club a real run for its money, before eventually losing 3–2 in the Somerset Rose Bowl Competition at Mendip Golf Club.
Blacker and Cheney gave the side a perfect start with a 3&2 win and there was an identical result for the Coleford pairing of Smith and Edgell. Cuer and Ricketts were beaten 3&1, Bendle and Barry Dugmore lost 5&4, while Button and Malcolm Tucker were defeated 5&3.
