Our speaker at the April meeting was Brian Jaques. As well as being an excellent gardener, Brian has a great love of words and language. He states that he loves reading the dictionary, though admits there's not much of a plot!

Brian has entertained us previously, explaining how plants are classified and how useful it is to have a worldwide language all gardeners are familiar with. This time, he delved into the origins of English. We learned that English can be traced back around 6,000 years ago, originating in what is now Ukraine and known as Proto-Indo-European. Around one-third of the words we use today originate from old English.

Brian's brilliantly presented talk led us through the origins of a selection of common garden terms; spade, yard, mulch and bed to name but a few.

Next month we will be learning All About Bees. Come and hear Tim Davies tell all.

We are meeting in the Village Hall, Ston Easton on Wednesday, May 15. The talk will start at 7:30pm. Hall open from 7pm. A warm welcome awaits members and visitors alike.

If you would like more info about the club, look out for our stall at Paulton Church Plant Sale on May 11.
