Midsomer Norton’s Withies Lane ground hosted the Somerset Women’s 1st XI last Sunday in an ECB Women’s County Championship Division Two match.
Batting first, the Somerset innings was interrupted by rain. Wickets fell at intervals, but Somerset opening bat and wicketkeeper, Gwenan Davies, held the innings together, falling just four runs short of a century at 96. Her 149-ball knock included five fours and one six. Somerset batted out their fifty overs and set the visitors a target of 191 runs for victory.
Durham struggled for runs from the outset and the innings never really got going. Only middle order bat, Becky Glen (28), reached double figures, but Durham’s response lasted into the 38th over. The Somerset bowlers shared the wickets, three each for Coombes and Withers, two for Comfort and one each for Randall and Richards.
Somerset and Staffordshire are battling out for top spot in the division.
