More than one in 20 adults in Bath and North East Somerset are lonely
Thousands of ultra low emission vehicles registered in Bath and North East Somerset – as campaigners group call for more equal access across UKAndrew, who has an aggressive form of brain cancer, was joined on this challenge by Nathan Reeve and different walkers for each 25-mile section – even Superman turned up for the last ten miles! Andrew, along with his support team, have raised over £2,500 to date and promoted awareness for the Brain Tumour Research charity. The walk took place from Bath to Hungerford and back, along the Kennet and Avon Canal and took around 72 hours.
Andrew says: "The walk was hard, but I could not have done it without all the support from friends and family. Since I was diagnosed with brain cancer, I have been shocked to discover how little awareness and funding (only receiving 0.7% of national cancer funding) is directed to this cancer, even though it kills more men under the age of 45 than prostate cancer, kills more women under the age of 35 than breast cancer and kills more people under the age of forty than any other cancer."
Before the walk began, the fundraising team had already beaten their £1,000 target, with many people donating to Andrew whilst en route. He says: "We must have collected a few hundred pounds just by walking along with our tins!
"I've now got the fund-raising bug and I really enjoyed the walking. It has been a challenge, but it was therapeutic too. People were finding us all the way along the route to offer their support – and fancy dress seemed to become a theme, so, if we were ever to do another fundraiser on this scale, I think we'll have to have an even better gimmick!"
Andrew is also the Minister at Radstock Baptist Church, where further fundraising will be continuing.
