Since 2008, local campaigners led by local councillors, Sarah Bevan and Nathan Hartley, have been calling for the streets where people live and shop to be reclaimed by residents.
From June 17th, it will be prohibited to drive a car at a speed exceeding 20mph on all streets in Peasedown St John.
All entry points will be signed, with repeater signs at intervals throughout longer roads and white-painted roundels on the carriageway at intervals.
Cllr Bevan said: "I know from personal experience that an adult can be killed by a motorist travelling at 30mph, so the introduction of a 20mph limit throughout Peasedown St John is a dream come true."
Former Cabinet Member for Transport in B&NES, Cllr Roger Symonds, in an article published by the Local Government Association on 4th May 2013, commented: "Putting in 20mph limits in residential streets means more than just making streets safer. It is the beginning of a cultural change where people take precedence over passing motor vehicles."
Cllr Bevan added: "In 2011, the United Nations announced a Decade of Action for Road Safety. Nearly 3.1 million people die every year on the world's roads, with six of those dying on Britain's roads every day. Road crashes are the leading cause of death among young people between the ages of five to 35.
"Whatever the worries about the cost of this measure, you can't put a price on people's lives."
