“Slap on the sun cream for a scorcher at Westfield Fun Day,” that’s how we ended our last article in the lead up to Fun Day – and you certainly needed it on Sunday, 3rd June!
The sun shone, the skies were blue and the field at Westhill Recreation Ground was cram-packed with fun. Skittles, tombola, BBQ, inflatables, plant stalls, sweets, and a fairground organ all set the tone for a good old fashioned community event.
While motor fans were treated to classic vehicles including bikes from the Radstock Devils Scooter Club, animal lovers got to meet the gorgeous donkeys from Danny Donkey and Pals and not one, not two, but five magnificent birds of prey from Pitcombe Rock Falconry, which had a constant stream of visitors throughout the day.
The Fire Service honoured their commitment to be there, despite having been out on a ‘shout’ just before the event started, and the Police Cadets also mingled with the crowds.
The Parish Council were delighted that local farmer and festival organiser extraordinaire, Michael Eavis, opened the event with some kind words about Westfield parish, which was created only seven years ago but which has a community heart going back generations.
Scruffs Dog Show was a great success, with lots of local dogs and their owners circling the show ring vying for such prizes as waggiest tail, best trick and young handler. Harley, the Yorkshire terrier, won a stunning three rosettes across the show, including ‘first prize for dog that looks like its owner’, but it was beautiful Samoyed, Sasha, who won the golden rosette for ‘the dog the judges most wanted to take home’.
Spiderman and Princess Elsa delighted the children as they mingled with the crowds and in the show ring, there were rousing performances from two wonderful silver bands, Westfield Ladies’ Choir, Limelight Dance School and stunning performances from Bathampton Morris Men and Jamie Woodland’s Academy.
Westfield Parish Council would like to thank everyone involved in putting on this fantastic event and everyone who came along to support it. If you would like to get involved with our friendly organisers, we would love to hear from you. Email: [email protected] or: 01761 410669.
