Writhlington Action Group (WAG) held its first ‘Village Get Together’ on Wednesday evening, 15th May to review and display its work over the last few months since it was established.
There were ten tables and displays with villagers exchanging news, sharing ideas and explaining developments. Michelle Taylor supervised the tea and a delicious selection of cakes was provided by WAG members.
B&NES and Town Councillor for Radstock, Chris Dando, was impressed. He said: “There was such an energy, village cohesion and so many good ideas whirling about.”
Lesley Mansell, who campaigned with Chris during the Local Elections but was unsuccessful in gaining the Haydon Town Council seat, said: “We must try to harness some of the small grants that are available for these wonderful ideas that everyone has come up with.”
Key to the event was news and information about the Village Plan. Claire Hicks, Jane Evans and Tim Summers talked about the proposal to submit a draft to the newly-elected Radstock Town Council.
Local researcher, Lavinia Corrick, who supervised a Historic Writhlington village quiz, said: “There were so many interesting conversations, and there is enough support for a series of projects and activities.”
One of the Radstock Town Councillors for Writhlington ward, Nick Toogood, chatted about Writhlington in Bloom; Kate Doliczy reported on the dangerous and congested traffic in the village, and the surveys she has co-ordinated to prove it.
The Village Hall Committee were very well represented and Helen Gulliford, who set up WAG, described the August Village Flower Show. Several of the recently formed Writhlington Litter Warriors talked about their next foray, this Sunday, 26th May.
A broadly smiling anonymous villager commented on the way out. “It was amazing! Seeing it all there – all that we have done in just a few months.”
Paul Thomas, Acting Chair, Writhlington Action Group
