If you are a young person living in Midsomer Norton and are tired of the adults always deciding what is best for you, then this could be your chance. At its meeting on Monday night, Midsomer Norton Town Council voted to set up a Youth Council, which will see eleven young people elected and give them the chance to speak on behalf of the youth in the area. They will be able to voice concerns and participate in local government, reporting back to the full Town Council at their monthly meetings, and be empowered to take decisions and action that will help the local community.

New Town Councillor, Sara Box, will be overseeing the initiative, alongside Town Clerk, Clive Stilwell, and they hope that the scheme will encourage young people to get involved with local government and encourage participants to become our Councillors of the future.

Local schools are currently being approached, and it is hoped an equal number of representatives will come forward from the two Midsomer Norton Secondary Schools. The first meeting should take place in December, with an initial budget of £1,000 for the Youth Council to use for activities for younger people.

Anyone who lives in or close to the Midsomer Norton electoral area is welcome to seek election and the Council would welcome interest from potential Youth Councillors who attend schools or colleges outside of the town. Also look out for the new Facebook page being set up.
