A Paulton schoolgirl who held a Macmillan Coffee Morning to celebrate her ninth birthday has raised over £270 for the cancer charity.

Amelia Cattanach, who turned nine on Saturday, chose to stage the fundraising effort instead of having a normal birthday party, after her Grandma was diagnosed with cancer.

She sent out invitations to her family and friends, asking for charity donations instead of birthday presents. Children and parents from the village came along to enjoy the fundraising festivities, which included homemade cakes, craft activities, a raffle and a cake auction.

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of Amelia’s family and friends, the big-hearted birthday-girl managed to raise a grand total of £272.42 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Amelia’s dad, Daniel Cattanach, said: “I told her that we were all really proud of her for what she has achieved, and she replied: ‘I wanted to help keep your Mum alive, as I would be sad if my Mummy died’. I welled up at that!

“We were overwhelmed by everyone’s generous donations and we all had a brilliant time for such a worthy cause. One of Amelia’s friends even made her a special fundraising medal. It was incredibly humbling for us and a great life lesson for Amelia.”
