Led by Matt Williams, Collections Manager, the children explored sea monsters, dragons and unicorns in their mythical form. They also considered animal forms that exist, or once existed, in nature and how these may have influenced the depiction of the mythical creatures. The children were shown pictures of various items in the Institute’s collection, including bones of Jurassic sea monsters and the horn of a narwhal which was believed long ago to be from a unicorn.
Following this, the children participated in an art workshop during which they produced ‘monster masks’ of a mythical creature of their own creation.
Headteacher, Karen Bazeley, said: “It was wonderful for the museum to come to the children and it was fantastic to see them applying their previous learning about fossils and dinosaurs to lively discussion with an expert.”
