IT WAS good to start the New Year with a members’ meeting at The Stoke Inn, Chew Valley.
We had a catch up and found that on the whole, members’ businesses were doing well, thanks to the quality of the personal services they offer. I am also pleased to say we continue to attract new members who bring fresh voices to our meetings and broaden the already wide range of businesses within our membership.
On a more sombre note, I had to formally report the sad passing of Roger Dando, a long-time supporter of the Chamber and a significant figure in the local business community over many years. He will be much missed.
There are many current issues which are having an effect on our members, such as business rates, tax reporting requirements and the proposed changes which will affect farmers. We will be keeping a very watchful eye on those and other topics so that we can comment and represent the views of local businesses.
One of the ways we will be doing that is by meeting up shortly with Bath and North East Somerset Council and updating it on issues of concern, such as the need for more business space and improved car parking in Chew Magna.
Members are concerned about the planned closure of the Chew Magna Post Office, which has been so well run by Moira and her team. It is a vital facility for both residents and businesses, becoming even more important following the closure of the banks. We will also be looking into whether or not a mobile banking service could be introduced, such as exists in other rural areas, with no permanent bank. Not a perfect solution, but a small step in the right direction.
