Five-year-old Caleb Hardman, from Radstock, had a special Christmas wish granted this December, when he was transported to a snowy winter wonderland in Lapland by Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK, the charity that grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.
Caleb was diagnosed with Alagille Syndrome (liver disease) at just four-weeks-old. Fat is not absorbed properly in his liver, so Caleb finds it very hard to put on weight. He takes eight types of medication a day, has regular hospital visits and is on an overnight feed pump. The long-term prognosis is uncertain, but the family hope to find Caleb a liver transplant in the next eighteen months.
Caleb became obsessed with Christmas after watching The Grinch during treatment, so for him, Lapland was the perfect wish! Upon arrival in Lapland, Caleb and his family were kitted out in thermal clothing before settling down for the evening, ready for the next few days of festive fun. They were treated to a husky ride, met some of the reindeer and elves, rode skidoos and got to look around Santa's Workshop, before setting off through the winter wonderland in search of Father Christmas!
Mum, Samantha, said: "The wish was truly magical. Caleb's favourite moment was meeting the elves and tracking Santa down! It meant everything to spend five carefree days together as a family, away from hospital and treatment. The wish created such happy memories for us, thank you Make-A-Wish."
There are currently 20,000 children and young people like Caleb in the UK fighting life-threatening conditions. Every one of these children deserves a Make-A-Wish wish. The charity receives no Government funding or lottery grants – so every donation really does count.
