Community groups in Bath and North East Somerset are being given the opportunity to share and promote their work to a radio audience as part of Kilter Theatre’s successful Unsung project.
Over the past two years, Unsung has enabled children and young people to take part in songwriting workshops, inspired by their local community, and have their songs performed by community choirs or professional singers at school assemblies, public events and singing days. This autumn, Kilter is looking to widen the celebration of the areas in and around Bath by reaching out to local interest groups, action groups, volunteers, clubs and societies who are helping shape the communities they are based in.
Kilter is seeking groups to take part in fun, playful and informal interviews, which will be recorded, combined with Unsung song recordings, and edited into a series of programmes to be broadcast on Bath Hospital Radio in 2017. Each programme will celebrate the interesting, exciting, unique and inspiring activities happening in a particular community, and will provide groups with the opportunity to promote their work to a wider audience.
Supported by Bath and North East Somerset Council, Curo, Westfield Parish Council and Midsomer Norton Town Council, the project has already enabled residents of Radstock, Westfield, Keynsham, Foxhill, Twerton and Snow Hill, to reflect on what makes their local community unique, resulting in the creation of twelve inspiring new songs. Described as “energising” and “joyful”, Unsung encourages a playful approach to thinking about our local communities. According to one participant, “[Unsung] made us laugh, cry, think and look forward to all the exciting times ahead!”
