Well done to everyone who guessed the Bath Record Office photograph last week – there were lots of you!

Thanks to Terry Reakes, Karen Thayer, Bob Ford, Martin Horler, Robert Dunford, Barry Maule, P.R. Provest, Ivor Davis, Chris Rylance, Sue Light and Jeff Parsons, who got in touch with their correct answers. It was, of course, Greyfield Colliery.

Barry Maule explains: “When the photograph was taken, it was known as Greyfield Colliery, Clutton, but after the boundary changes in 1952, it became Greyfield Colliery, High Littleton.

“The photograph must have been taken around the turn of the 20th century. Later photos show the chimney truncated just above the wider

brickwork. The chimney was demolished sometime in the early ’50s. Joe Fenton, the village headmaster, took the bigger children out to watch it being demolished, but we younger ones had to stay behind.”

So, think you can identify this week’s photograph? Answer in next week’s Journal. Email: [email protected] with your answer and even a photograph of what the scene looks like today, or send it to us via Facebook: @MNRJournal.
