Last week’s Mystery Photograph, of South Road in Timsbury, was kindly supplied by Somerset Coalfield Life. Well done to all those who guessed correctly:

Sally Bown, Paul Hancock, Eric Brain, Mr Swift, Dave Curtis, Derek Biggs, Les Box and Hannah Selway, Gilmour Jones, Rodney Gullick, Ray Chivers, Jonathan Griffin, Ivor Davis.

A special well done goes to Carole Faithorn who told The Journal: “ This week’s photo is of South Road, Timsbury, roughly between Church Hill and Maggs Hill. It’s difficult to date, but perhaps late C19th/early C20th?

“The area on the right hand side is now developed. I think the trees mark the boundary of Parish’s House grounds. The tall building on the left used to be Dandos Boot and Shoe Shop and off to the right is Radford Hill. There were a couple more shops on the left just beyond the man, the first of which was for many years a newsagents. The owners between 1888 and 1968 were members of the Hodder family. Maybe the man is George Hodder - the first newsagent?

“The furthest building on the left is South Road Methodist Church - a Wesleyan Chapel, like others in this area, built by the villagers themselves with their own money in 1805.”

Thank you to all our readers’ for your continued support of this feature. If you think you know anything about this week’s photograph, kindly supplied by John Higgins, email: [email protected]
