Which of the Chew Valley’s beautiful Churches is shown here? Has it changed much since this photo was taken? Perhaps you have marked important stages in your life there.

If you recognise it and would like a mention in The Gazette, please contact the Editor at [email protected].

Last month’s photo showed the centre of West Harptree. Taken in the 1860s, the scene is still very recognisable. The photographer was standing in the Churchyard, looking along what is now the A368 towards the shop, which was run at that time by Joseph Lane Collins. It stayed in the same family until the beginning of the twentieth century, when Joseph’s daughter and her husband moved to Blagdon, where their descendants, the Redwood family, were still running the shop in living memory.

Thank you to Elaine Symes who said: ‘The Mystery Photo in the January issue of The Gazette is of the main street in West Harptree.

‘I was born in one of the houses on the right hand side of the photo, which is opposite the Crown Inn Public House.

‘The building to the left of the row of houses, is a shop and post office, I don’t know the date of the photo.’
