Yet another large housing development is being planned for a community that feels it is being extended beyond sustainability.

A planning application for 42 residential units on Stockhill Road, in Chilcompton, has been submitted to Mendip District Council. It comes on top of a planned development of fifty houses off Broadway, by the Somerset Wagon, and several other large proposed developments that are currently going through an appeal process. Chilcompton Parish Councillor, David Thwaites, said: "Please, no more! It's like we're being invaded by marauding developers. The cumulative impact means that the infrastructure of the village is no longer sustainable. We're already bussing children to other town schools. The drainage system can't handle it and the lanes in the village are increasingly dangerous – there was a fatality last month."

The Parish Council are urging any residents who have comments to make to write to the District Council Planners. The traffic consequences is seen as one of the biggest issues. The site of the proposed development is at the narrowest part of Stockhill Road, where there are no pavements. Martin Stanford, Parish Councillor, said: "The Planning Inspector has told us that Chilcompton has already exceeded the number of houses that it is expected to deliver. What's more, this is on a greenfield site, outside the village envelope, it will be really harmful on the countryside's character here."
