A bright sunny day was the backdrop for the annual Mid Somerset Show hedge laying competition which took place at Launcherley, near Wells.

This has become a popular fixture in the spring calendar with over twenty entries across two classes, novice and open. There were two lady competitors, one of whom had major surgery just nine weeks ago.

The hedging competition stopped in 1965 and was re-instated some sixteen years ago. The judges this year were Paul Keel from Burrington and Peter Yeates from Bridport, they described the hedge allocated for the competition as challenging.

The winner of the open class was Chris Chivers (pictured) from Midsomer Norton, who also won the championship.

A tractor run was part of the day with forty five tractors going on a twenty-mile run through Godney and Wookey and finally going down Wells High Street, where there were crowds lining the street. More vehicles entered the Land Rover meet with thirty taking part of all ages, styles and colours. Rosie Sage
