The show, which took place on 1st October, following only seven weeks after a fantastic summer show, was also a great success. Many local people from Clutton, Temple Cloud and nearby villages like to come, but also some from further away who had heard about the show from the newspapers or radio.
After viewing the entries in the hall (and skittle alley, thanks to Clutton Social Club), visitors were able to sit down with tea and homemade cake.
The magnificently-presented vegetables were a delight to see, scrubbed clean and with no apparent bugs lurking in their foliage. Huge lettuces, sparkling leeks, colourful carrots,
gigantic onions, matching shallots, beautiful apples, and some interesting new vegetables were admired by visitors, before they moved on to the flower classes.
Again, these drew one’s breath away with the size and beauty of the blooms. Lots of dahlias, fragrant roses,
magnificent begonias, fuchsias, gladioli, and an interesting range of pot plants were on show, wowing the visitors.
There were only two floral art entries, both congratulated by the judge, and only one child entered this year which was a great pity. The craft section had fewer entries than usual, (though they were much-admired by judge and visitors), but the cookery section was well supported, with lots of jams, jellies, chutneys and pickles, and some scrummy baking entries.
The photography section had many attractive pictures, which the judge found difficult to choose between, and the CHS committee is happy that more people are now deciding to print their photos so they can be entered in the shows.
Clutton Horticultural Society congratulates all those who entered the show, and hopes everyone will feel inspired next year as well.
This is a village show, with the emphasis on small and friendly, so anyone who is not sure about entering next year can seek advice from any of the committee; also both summer and autumn shows have regular competitors who have been coming to Clutton’s show for years, and they have said that they are willing to advise or help anyone new.
The next summer show date is Saturday, 11th August 2018 (autumn show date will be agreed at our AGM), and CHS hopes to see many competitors then.
