This Sunday, 17th February, sees another in the series of walks entitled 'Carrying Coals to Dundas' led by Mike Chapman, a local historian who specialises in the history of the Somersetshire Coal Canal.
These walks are aimed at the general public who want to know more about the canal. During the next few months, they will cover the whole length of the northern branch of the S.C.C. from Paulton to Dundas, following the route taken by the coal which made the fortunes of this canal and the North Somerset Coalfield.
Postponed from last month, due to the weather, this walk covers the Combe Hay lock flight. Recent clearance of undergrowth means that for the first time in living memory, it is now possible for a party of walkers to be taken along the towpath for the full length of the lock flight. The walk begins at The Avenue, Combe Hay, at 10 a.m. For more information, please phone Mike on 01225 426948.
Next week, on Thursday, 21st February, the Somersetshire Coal Canal Society will once again host another of their popular series of meetings at the Radstock Working Men's Club, commencing at 7.30 p.m. This month, Barry Maule will give an illustrated talk, entitled 'Coal Mining In High Littleton and its connections with the S.C.C.', Admission is free, but donations towards the hire of the room will be welcome.
Dates for future meetings will be Thursday, 21st March and Thursday, 18th April.
