The latest Ofsted report for Norton Radstock College is disappointing, says its Principal, Shirley Arayan.

The report found student success was in line with national rates, its job shop is described as invaluable and disadvantaged and vulnerable young people are helped to achieve. Students were praised for their personal and social skills, with a high number going into employment or further study.

But the Inspectors marked the college as a four, demanding improvements. It has been given a number of key action points and told it must speed up its improvements following the last inspection. It also described a "very small minority" of lessons as inadequate and said not enough were good or excellent, despite praising teaching in various areas.

The college has been working with a moderating Ofsted Inspector for the last year and says the latest report is disappointing. Principal, Shirley Arayan, said: "The Governors, senior leadership team and I are disappointed by the latest report, as we feel it is contradictory in its comments as it doesn't align itself with the feedback we have received from a moderating Ofsted Inspector, who has been working with us via regular visits throughout the last year.

"However, we are determined to keep building on our successes and we have already taken action to make meaningful changes, including improving the management and teaching of English and Maths and engaging business advisers to support us in developing a new operating model.

"We are very pleased that Ofsted praised high quality teaching in several departments, recognised the excellent teaching facilities we have and the difference the free transport makes to students who could not otherwise get to college.

"There are many positive comments made about the success of our students and the report highlights that many go into employment or further study following their college courses. Our students' achievements should be celebrated.

"We are all working together to make sure that we quickly become the good college our students deserve."
