The Colliers Way Cycle Group’s extended ride for July cruised through the grounds of Stourhead and Longleat, both of which have Sustrans cycling routes running through them.
After a long slog up Gare Hill, on one of the hottest days of the summer so far, the cyclists were glad to spend time in the shade, when they came across ‘Ebenezer’s Bike’, next to Stourhead House. This installation forms part of the ‘Stourhead Will Never Forget’ Sculpture Trail, commemorating the effects of World War I on the local community. Ebenezer Stone was a local stable lad, who made a bike in 1914, before losing both legs in the War.
Contemplating the sculpture was followed by a peaceful coffee stop, at the National Trust Tearooms. Returning through Longleat and Frome, the group then enjoyed another refreshment break at Nunney’s Moat and Turret Café, before the final leg back to Radstock.
Colliers Way Cycling Group meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for leisure rides of twenty to thirty miles, usually starting from Radstock, and always heading to a café for refreshments, mid-ride. New members are welcome, see: www.collierswaycycling.co.uk for more details.
