In memory of their dear friend, Heather and Tony Shaw, from Timsbury, climbed Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, on Saturday, 4th October, to raise money for Dorothy House Hospice Care.
Phil Wright sadly died, aged 67, on his birthday in July this year and Heather and Tony had originally planned to walk the route with Phil, as he and Tony had walked miles together over the years.
Climbing the mountain for Heather was going to be a challenge before she had even begun, as she has had her left hip replaced five years ago, knee surgery two years ago and is having the other hip
replaced in January next year. However, she was determined to carry on with the walk, as planned, to honour their pledge to Phil and for Dorothy House, as a thank you to them for supporting Phil and his family – indeed, the charity continues to do so after his death.
Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales and the southern United Kingdom, in the Brecon Beacons National Park, situated at 886 metres above sea level.
Heather says: "It was a very windy day, with low cloud, but as the climb progressed, the sun came out and the views were stunning."
Heather carried their last photo of Phil to the top in his treasured 'man-bag' that Tony has inherited. Thanks to their friends, family and Tony's employers (Zurich Risk Services) they will have raised well over £1,000, with money still coming in.
