A lifelong member of the Guiding movement, Julie Harrington (or Tawny Owl as she is known to so many) was presented with her 40 Year Long Service Award at the Christingle Service on 17th December 2021.

It was actually due in December 2020 but unfortunately due to Covid we were unable to celebrate and present the award then.

Julie started her Guiding journey as a Brownie at Paulton Brownies, moved onto Paulton Guides at the age of 10 and then in 1980, Julie started as a Young Leader at second Paulton Brownies.

Three years later, she started her Girlguiding Leader in Training qualification and qualified as a warranted leader two years later.

Julie took over as Guider In Charge of second Paulton Brownies in 2011 and the unit has continued to thrive under her leadership.

Sue Lake, a member of the Guider team said: “Julie is passionate about Guiding and second Paulton Brownies by inspiring girls through their Brownie journey, giving her time, expertise and enthusiasm to help girls thrive.”

Not only does Julie and her team plan and run weekly meetings, she also arranges special trips and events, including pack holidays giving the Brownie’s fantastic opportunities and experiences.

The other leaders in Julie’s team say there’s nobody quite like our Tawny! She embraces her Guiding with lots of enthusiasm, loads of energy, a little bit of crazy, plus a sprinkling of glitter!!

Julie said: “To see young girls become young women and develop their leadership skills is a huge privilege.”

B&NES Councillor for Paulton, Liz Hardman said: “We are so lucky here in Paulton to have such a talented and dedicated Guider in Charge. Congratulations Julie on your 40 years of guiding.”
