Radstock Museum has a few photographs in this feature that requires information from our readers – because nothing is known about them. Sometimes that turns up a big blank, and other times, such as this week, it provides a fascinating insight into local history. A very big thank you to all of you who have been in touch – we will pass on your information to the Museum.
Quite a few of you thought it could be to do with the Queen’s Coronation and those who have been in touch did get the location correct. We think, from all of your answers, it was a party held at Orchard Vale, Midsomer Norton to
celebrate VE Day at the end of the Second World War in 1945.
Thank you to Paul Hancock, Roger Winsleyand Ann McAleese (nee Woodland), from
Midsomer Norton, who was at the party!
She says: “I was there somewhere with my younger brothers, I remember there were lots of fish paste sandwiches. The boy in front, I believe, is one of the Windless brothers and the girl beside him I think is Netta Comer. You can see the ladies in the back – there is a Mrs Mount and Mrs Gulliford, and the women had organised the whole thing.
“I remember we had to bring our own chair and a plate and that we had squash and lemonade jellies – and that the men brought food from their greenhouses.
“When we had taken everything home we were all stood on the pavement and then taken down to the Palladium Cinema to watch a film, although I don’t remember what film it was.
“When we came out, there were people waiting with baskets and we were given a bar of five boys chocolate and an orange each.
“I remember having that whole bar of chocolate to myself – it was years since I had done that. Fry’s must have donated them. We took the oranges home and put them in segments on a saucer in the middle of the table to share them – but I didn’t share the chocolate!
“I have a picture at home of the same party from a different angle.”
These are wonderful memories, thank you for sharing them Ann!
We also heard from a family member of Netta Comer and have a few more names – Netta is pictured with her sister, Peggy, and others are Tony Windless, Jean Woodland and Janet Hill.
Nicola Windless also got in touch to say her Auntie by marriage is indeed
pictured with her three brothers. Thank you, everyone!
So, back to local mining this week – can you guess where this week’s Mystery
Photograph was taken?
A huge thank you to Radstock Museum, who support this feature so brilliantly. If you have the answer or any information on this week’s Mystery Photograph and would like a mention, email: [email protected] before 5pm on Monday.
