Last week, the A Level students at Somervale impressed with the best results ever and this week it was the turn of the sixteen-year-olds, who achieved some outstanding outcomes once again.

Somervale School has excelled at GCSE this year with its best results in its history on many key measures. At the 5 A*–C including English and Maths measure, results were up 10% on last year to 62%. Both English and Maths were both well above the national average at 75% A*–C. Most impressive was the progress the students have made since entering the school in Year 7, especially in English and Maths, which should place the school in the top 25% in the country for pupil progress. Academic subjects in particular have seen some impressive outcomes, with History hitting 70% A*–C, Geography at 65% A*-C and Spanish at 81% A*–C.

Connie Glover achieved 12 A*/A grades, Kate McDowell, Jake Beale and Connie Joyce all achieved 6 A*/A grades with 12 A*–C GCSE grades. Every student who wished to enter the Sixth Form got the entry grades required. In the option subjects, Music was the highest performer with 100% A*–C pass rate. In the EBAC subjects, 27% of students achieved a C or above in all subjects, which is a significant rise on the previous year.

Headteacher, Alun Williams, was particularly pleased with the rapid rise in the achievement of all students. He said: “These results are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the students and the support of their teachers and parents.

“The students have really done themselves proud this year and are continuing to stay on into the Midsomer Norton Sixth Form in record numbers, which shows their confidence in what the schools have to offer.

“I am delighted that Somervale is now firmly above the national averages in all key measures and has comparable results to local schools.

“The progress made by students is particularly impressive and demonstrates that any student who attends Somervale will achieve success.”
