If you have been enjoying David Attenborough’s

Green Planet, you may have noticed some

wonderful tropical orchids. All of the

orchids featured are grown by the students of Writhlington School and the Mendip Studio School in Writhlington, Radstock.

Over the past twelve months, students have been

working with Director of Timelapse Photography,

Tim Shepherd, and his studio team in Exeter.

Pupil Mylee Heath, from Year 7, explained: “We grow over a thousand extraordinary different orchids in

the Writhlington Greenhouses and for Green Planet we had to find the right plants for the special habitats being filmed for the series.

“We met Tim and sent more than one hundred plants to perform in front of his cameras.”

Ash Mogg, from Year 8, added: “It has been a proud

moment to see our plants on TV and really interesting to see how the buds open with time lapse.”

Keep an eye out for more of the Writhlington Orchids in future episodes of the series. Students will be holding a Spring Open Day in March 2022 when the public will have a chance to see the Green Planet orchids up close.
