World Book Day looked very different in 2021 and a national lockdown, but children both at home and school celebrated all things literature last Thursday, dressing up as their favourite characters, re-reading their favourite books and taking part in lots of fun activities, including competitions and virtual workshops. Children also got creative by finding new places to read – some of which produced some brilliant photographs as you will see here!
St John’s School, Midsomer Norton
World Book Day was slightly different this year – unfortunately we were unable to all be together in the same building for our celebrations, however, we were still able to hold plenty of exciting activities and dress up as our favourite literary characters.
Many pupils took part in a ‘Get Caught Reading’ competition and shared photos of the variety of places they found to enjoy a book – on a walk, in the park, in a cupboard and even up a tree and in the bath!
Pupils also explored their creative inspirations and
designed amazing potato book characters. Plus, the school’s PTA funded virtual theatre performances of Treasure Island and Goldilocks and the Three Bears which pupils were able to enjoy during the day.
Longvernal Primary School
Despite lockdown, at Longvernal Primary School, World Book Day was a wonderful week-long celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly – a celebration of reading.
The children, whether in school or remotely, dressed up as characters from their favourite books, crafted brilliant bookmarks in the style of artists they had studied and penned book reviews. Pupils also took part in a hilarious book quiz, a reading treasure hunt and an extreme reading event in bizarre places.
As a finale to the fun-filled week, they enjoyed a virtual drama workshop with the renowned Natural Theatre Company. Cindy James, English Lead, said: “It was a wonderful end to a difficult period of remote learning.”
