Students at the Writhlington School Orchid Project are getting ready to host the National Orchid Show on Saturday, 3rd and Sunday, 4th November.

The event, which is the biggest Orchid event in the UK, is normally organised by a committee of adults, but this year it is all being put together by teenagers.

Year 9 student, Ed Jones, said: “Visitors will be coming from all across the UK to learn about orchids and buy plants from specialist orchid nurseries from across Europe.”

The show will feature displays from most of the UK’s specialist Orchid Societies, lectures and advice for anyone interested in growing orchids, activities for old and young and a wide range of refreshments.

Ed is especially excited to show his South American Orchids to the public. He said: “At school, we have some of the biggest orchids in Europe, and it will be a treat to share them with our visitors.”

There is also a scientific lecture programme co-ordinated by Year 11 student, Tallis Inger-Flecker. Tallis said: “I will be introducing two days of lectures on orchid conservation and science from researchers working at Kew and experts from as far afield as Switzerland. The public can sign up for lectures when they arrive at the event.”

The National Orchid Show is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Writhlington School. More information at: www.wsbeorchids.org
