At the station in Silver Street, Midsomer Norton, the Heritage Railway Trust is gearing up for the next year’s development work and special events. After three very successful Santa Special weekends, the next event will be in March, with a visiting steam engine for special interest.
A small dedicated band of volunteers work hard behind the scenes to restore the Somerset and Dorset Railway to its former glory, and make it a special place for family, visitors and enthusiasts alike.
They have a small, well-equipped workshop where they perform engineering miracles on a daily basis, rebuilding worn-out equipment from a bygone age. The work is always different and challenging and there are a variety of people and a variety of skills to achieve amazing results.
Ongoing projects include restoring a guard’s van, restoring a Wickham track inspection trolley and extending the mechanical locking in their signal box. Machine room project volunteer, Alan Price, is looking for more people with engineering experience to help complete these and future tasks.
Alan said: “Volunteers of any experience are always welcome on Sundays and Mondays at the station, but if you have engineering experience you will be especially welcome. Come along to Midsomer Norton Station if you are
interested in becoming part of this heritage preservation railway, or call me on: 07751 381527 for more details.”
