THE start of a five week forest bathing course is set to get underway soon in Midsomer Norton.

Hosted by Somer Valley Rediscovered, this course will run every Friday from Friday, August 29, to Friday, September 26.

The aim of each session is to ensure that participants learn mindfulness techniques, breathing exercises, and gentle movement designed to help you help unwind and recharge.

Organisers say that no prior experience necessary, but ask that those attending bring an open mind and a willingness to learn.

Participants should begin to meet up at 11.15am with an aim to begin each session at 11.30am, which are expected to last for two hours.

Those taking part should meet at the entrance to Midsomer Norton Cricket Club on Withies Lane before setting off through the Silver Street Nature Reserve.

Forest bathing, also known as ‘shinrin-yoku’, is a Japanese practice that involves slowing down and immersing oneself in the forest atmosphere to promote relaxation and well-being.

Developed in the 1980s, it is designed to encourage mindful observation of nature through all five senses and can help to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost the immune system.

Following studies conducted by the Japanese government, results showed that two hours of mindful exploration in a forest could reduce blood pressure, lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and improve concentration and memory, shortly after which they introduced forest bathing to be a part of their national health programme.

The study also found that trees release chemicals called ‘phytoncides’, which have a protective anti-microbial effect on human bodies which would boost the immune system.

The event is listed as being suitable for adults. It is free to join each week, with free venue parking also being available.
