The MP for Bath joined families in Odd Down and beyond to attend the area’s third annual Community Fun Day.
MP Wera Hobbhouse (Liberal Democrats) went to the event on the afternoon of Sunday, July 6, at the Odd Down Sports Ground, and featured a wide range of entertainment such as crafts, stalls, tombola, music and food.
The Community Fun Day was organised by Odd Down Community Association (ODCA) and GLL, the operators of the Odd Down Sports Ground.
The previous year’s running of the show had successfully raised £1,490 split between their three chosen charities: the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity, Odd Down Community Association, and Julian House.
Since its formation in 2012, the ODCA, a registered charity, has raised more than £90,000 which has been used to support local projects through a number of grants in partnership with Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) Council.
This year’s event was declared open by the mayor of Bath Cllr Bharat Pankhania (Liberal Democrats, Combe Down) at the stroke of midday, allowing the hundreds of people in attendance to explore the dozens of stalls offering a variety of attractions, including handmade jewellery, sweets, face painting and more.
The event also featured its very own fun fair for the afternoon.
New for this year’s running of the Community Fun Day was a selection of classic cars for people to see, while Radio Bath provided music throughout the afternoon.
B&NES councillor Joel Hirst (Liberal Democrats, Odd Down) said: “We are so lucky to have Odd Down Sports Ground here on our doorstep, with its fantastic sports facilities, cycle track and excellent cafe.
“Part of an over £3-million investment by Bath & North East Somerset Council, Sport England, British Cycling, the England and Wales Cricket Board, Rugby Football Union, the Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund, it has ensured a legacy for the whole community for generations to come.
“And it really comes into its own hosting an event like this, with something for everyone. Afternoons like this really do create everlasting memories of fun, family, friends - and flake ice creams.”
"To be able to have such a brilliant community get-together out in the open air, and at the same time raise funds for this year’s charities All Cycle Bath & West, Radio Bath and the Odd Down Community Association, makes this an unforgettable day and I am already looking forward to next year’s Fun Day.”
Ms Hobhouse added: “‘I had a wonderful time enjoying a fun afternoon that brought the whole community together.
“Many congratulations and thanks to the volunteers, who were the backbone of the event, as well as Joel and his fellow ward councillor Steve Hedges, the Odd Down Community Association themselves, and of course to GLL who look after this excellent site.
“In an age of big council cuts it’s important we keep community events alive. The Odd Down Community Fun Day is testament to the determination and resilience of the community to make things happen.”
