To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the closure of the Somerset and Dorset Railway, the Midsomer Norton Society is welcoming a speaker at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, 31st March who will explore the history of the line and of the area’s local station.

Little has been written specifically about Midsomer Norton South, apart from one book that is currently out of print. The information can only be accessed by looking at the many different, but more general books and articles about the railway and by talking to those who knew it.

The Society’s talk will bring together material from a wide range of sources, including individual memories, to show how important this railway was, both to the local community, to the region and to the nation. As such, it is intended to be of general social and historical interest and not purely for railway enthusiasts.

Having addressed briefly the inception of the whole railway, the talk will go on to show how much it featured in local life by concentrating on activities close to the station itself. There will be some light-hearted items and even references to verse. Finally, the closure and the current revival of the station itself will be covered.

This is an evening not to be missed and non-members are very welcome with attendees encouraged to relate their own recollections during the talk. For further details, visit: www.midsomernortonsociety.co.uk
