FIRST Bus has responded to a petition launched by Writhlington residents calling for the return of the D2X bus service, which was withdrawn following the reopening of the A36.
Many locals say they now feel isolated without the ‘lifeline’ connection that the bus provided between Frome, Radstock, and Bath.
The D2X route had been temporarily diverted through Writhlington during the A36 closure, offering a reliable and frequent service that helped residents access essential appointments, work, and errands. Writhlington Action Group supported the petition, highlighting the difficulties caused by the service’s removal.
George Burton, head of network for First Bus in the West of England said: “The routing of the D2X through Radstock and Peasedown St John was only ever a temporary diversion during the closure of the A36. Now that road has reopened, the D2x has reverted to its original route through Norton St Philip, Hinton Charterhouse and Midford.
“While we recognise that some residents on that diversion have taken advantage of the D2x, our current data doesn’t show there is a strong enough need to introduce it permanently.
“However, we review our network twice a year – in April and September - as part of our partnership with the West of England Combined Authority and Bath and North East Somerset Council. Those reviews allow us to see where improvements can be made, with decisions based on feedback from customers, the public and local authorities, as well as using our own data.
“Residents can also lobby their local authority if they feel a bus service is needed in their community.”
First Bus confirmed that any changes to services will be considered during these regular reviews, which provide opportunities for local feedback to influence future routes.
