Patricia Naish of Paulton has become Midsomer Norton and Radstock Rotary Club’s first female President in its 63 year history, and she hot-footed it to Inner Wheel members to tell them how she hoped the clubs would work closely together in fellowship during her year.

Much is planned, including a visit to the Children’s Hospice South West in Wraxall, her chosen charity, and the setting up of Rotakids for seven to twelve-year-olds in Midsomer Norton to help them make friends and become involved in important community activities.

Based in schools, youth groups and community centres, and supported by teachers, youth leaders and Rotarians, Rotakids will bring exciting and practical approaches to supporting the citizenship element of the national curriculum.

“It will also boost young people’s confidence and self-esteem and help them to understand how their actions can impact on others,”

Patricia said. Run on the same principles as Rotary, the young people will nominate their own President, Secretary, Treasurer and other key posts to support genuine opportunities to bring about social change.

Although fundraising for worthy causes would be important, Patricia emphasised that her main aims would be fellowship within the community and boosting membership.

Sue Hopkins is continuing as President of Inner Wheel for a further year, and has distributed her new programme of monthly meetings, events, outings and coffee mornings.

Members are particularly looking forward to an August cream tea at the home of Sally Blanning and the club’s October Charter Night celebration at the Centurion Hotel, when award-winning comedian/magician, Nutty Noah, will entertain.
