Owners of Rebecca's Flower Shop in Radstock, mother and daughter, Carol Warrener and Rebecca Bolton, held a cake sale and Easter raffle in their shop on 28th March. Friends, family and customers were invited to enjoy homemade cupcakes and cookies. Together, everyone raised a brilliant £430 for the Forever Friends Appeal's Cancer Care Campaign.
The Forever Friends Appeal have been asked to raise £5.5 million towards a new pioneering Cancer Centre at the RUH. Rebecca comments: "Cancer is very close to home for our family, which is why we wanted to help raise money for this new cancer centre. We chose to support this worthy cause because my grandad, Bob Davis, from Bath, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2009 and is currently receiving great treatment in Haematology at the RUH. My mother-in-law also suffered with bladder cancer but, unfortunately, lost her battle with the disease earlier this year."
Much of the existing RUH cancer services are located in seventy-year-old, inadequate, wartime accommodation and are in desperate need of improving.
The RUH is planning on providing a state-of-the-art, 21st century build, fit for purpose. Building on the excellent track record with the RUH's last capital project, the Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care, the new Cancer Centre will adopt a holistic approach. Combining 'clinical excellence', a 'therapeutic environment', a 'survivorship model of care' and 'proactive research' – all designed to create a highly beneficial, healing environment for the RUH cancer patients and their families.
Zoe Tainton, Community Fundraiser at the Forever Friends Appeal, comments: "It is truly inspiring to meet people in the community who are so passionate about the cause. Having experienced the cancer facilities first-hand, Rebecca and her family realise what it would mean for patients and their families to be sitting in a welcoming, comfortable and soothing environment. By providing an environment which is holistic, the patient's well-being and state of mind is improved. This is essential if we want our patients to go through treatment with the least amount of stress."
Rebecca's mum, Carol, says: "I am overwhelmed by all the support and how generous people were and would like to thank them all!" Rebecca's Flower Shop were supported by thirteen local stalls who donated great raffle prizes and helped them raise the funds.
