A FOOTBALL match in the Chew Valley was abandoned following allegations that a homophobic slur was used.

The incident took place in the fixture between Chew Magna Football Club and Axbridge United in the Uhlsport Somerset County League Division Three, which was held on Saturday, September 27, at Chew Magna’s home ground on Stowey Lane, Clutton.

The Chew Magna players unanimously decided to walk away from the game at half time after the Axbridge captain allegedly use a homophobic slur towards one of their players.

They say that they made this decision after no action was taken against the player in question.

The FA list the game as having been 3-0 to Axbridge prior to its abandonment.

In a statement, Chew Magna Football Club said: “Today’s first team game was abandoned at half time following a homophobic slur from the Axbridge captain towards a Chew Magna player.

“Having been on the receiving end of this a couple of times in recent years and due to no action being taken against the player in question, the Chew Magna team were unanimous in their decision to leave the field of play. There is no place for abuse of any kind in football.”

Somerset FA said: “We are aware of allegations of homophobic language used during the Axbridge United vs Chew Magna fixture on Saturday, September 27.

“Somerset FA can confirm that we are working closely with all parties to involved to investigate the situation fully. We are investigating the allegations in line with FA disciplinary regulations; there will be no further comment pending this process.

“Somerset FA does not condone any form of discrimination, whether that is on or off the pitch. We remain committed to ensuring that football in Somerset is a safe, inclusive environment for everyone.”

Axbridge United have been approached for comment.
