THE former MP for Somerton and Frome has been found dead at the age of 59.

David Warburton was found dead in his west London flat on the morning of Tuesday, August 26.

Mr Warburton was elected as the Conservative MP for Somerton and Frome in the 2015 general election, and during his time in government would be promoted to the position of Parliamentary private secretary to the department for education.

However, his time in Parliament would end in controversy, after he was suspended by the Conservative Party following sexual misconduct allegations, which were investigated by Parliament's Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme.

Mr Warburton denied the allegations of sexual conduct, but did resign as MP in June 2023, by which point the parliamentary investigation had lasted 14 months.

His resignation would trigger a by-election, which was won by Liberal Democrat Sarah Dyke.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan police said: “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 10.47am on Tuesday, August 26, to an address at Chelsea Crescent, Sands End.

“A man in his 50s was found dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

“His death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious.”

Tributes to David Warburton have been coming in from colleagues and those who knew him.

Simon Hoare, MP for North Dorset, said: “I am saddened to hear of the death of my former colleague and parliamentary neighbour David Warburton at the age of just 59. David and I entered the Commons together and always got on well.

“He was always kind and had a warm sense of humour. He served his community with serious diligence. A family have lost a loved one and I pray for them and that David will rest in peace.”

Martin Dimery, Green Party councillor for Somerset Council, said: “Before standing in the by-election caused by David Warburton's resignation, I met him on a few occasions when he represented Somerton and Frome as the MP. He was always approachable and friendly.

“He was a talented musician and had worked hard to try to improve conditions in the music industry. His politics and mine were poles apart but I am shocked by his sudden death and I extend my condolences to his family.”

Cllr Fiona Barrows, leader of Frome Town Council, said: “We are saddened to hear of the death of David Warburton, who served as the Member of Parliament for Somerton and Frome from 2015 to 2022.

“Public service is never easy. Representing a community and putting your head above the parapet takes courage and commitment.

“During his years in office, David worked hard to raise issues that mattered locally — from rural broadband and transport to supporting pubs and cider and cheese makers. He’ll be remembered here in Frome for helping us secure the Town Hall as a lasting civic home.

“On behalf of the town, we extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
