Former Writhlington School students, Heather Limond and Zoe Barnes, have begun an adventure of a lifetime in the mountains of Rwanda.
Having made links through the Writhlington Orchid Project, Heather and Zoe will be helping set up sustainable orchid enterprises and teaching local scientists orchid conservation and propagation techniques.
The two students, who completed their A levels at Writhlington School last summer, spent seven years consolidating knowledge of orchids with the school-run project attending seminars and are experts in orchids and conservation.
Zoe explained about the sustainable enterprises: “One of our projects here is to help students devise and set-up enterprises from the orchid propagation laboratory we have built at Kitabi College.”
Writhlington teacher, Simon Pugh-Jones, is proud of the girls’ commitment. “Zoe and Heather will make a real difference to conservation and education in Rwanda, as well as gaining excellent experience for their own future careers.”
Writhlington Orchid Club will hold their annual ‘Orchid Christmas’ on Thursday, 10th December. The event runs from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and will include tours of the greenhouses, orchid sales and Christmas refreshments.
