George Hill, from Radstock, is this week rehearsing in London, ready to return to the West End stage after four years. George previously retired from the stage and together with his mother, Sue, founded the Bath Dance College (BDC), based at the Victoria Hall, with the pair helping to bring cinema, theatre and live music to the town.
Upon returning from the stage, George was passionate about providing equal training opportunities for people in the South West, with past students including successful actress, Maisie Williams.
George will perform as a dancer in McQueen, which opened at St James Theatre on Tuesday. The production is a journey into the visionary imagination and dark dream world of Alexander McQueen, fashion's greatest contemporary artist. Set on a single London night, it is more than a bio-play. It is stepping into the fairy story landscape of McQueen's mind, the landscape seen in his immortal shows, where, with a single dress, an urchin can become an Amazon. The play tells the story of a girl who has watched McQueen's Mayfair house for eleven consecutive days. One night she climbs down from her watching tree and breaks into his house, to steal a dress. He catches her, but, instead of calling the police, they embark together on a journey through London and into his heart.
Award-winning actor, Stephen Wight (Sherlock, The Ladykillers) takes on the role of McQueen and Dianna Agron (Glee) will play Dahlia in this new play by James Phillips. The play will be directed by John Caird, most notably recognised for directing the original world premiere of Les Misérables, with choreography by Christopher Marney (Matthew Bourne).
George said: "I'm loving this experience. It's an absolute honour to work with a Director like John Caird and the choreography is just beautiful. I was extremely nervous at the start of rehearsals, but I'm now just extremely excited about the shows."
In George's absence, BDC students are being taught by ex-principal dancer of the Royal Ballet, Karen Paisey. Karen trained at the Royal Ballet School and upon graduation, joined the RoyalBallet Company. At the young age of only 23, Karen was promoted to a principal dancer, performing leading roles in the classics, including Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and The Nutcracker. Karen now teaches for the Royal Ballet School.
Once shows start this week, George will be splitting his time between the West End and Radstock, sharing his teaching with Karen. "I will be back!" says George. "I love teaching and will be up and down to Bath between shows. I'll be sharing my lessons with Karen Paisey, which is an amazing opportunity for them. She was not only an inspirational dancer, but is also a fantastic teacher."
George started dancing at his mother's dancing school, the Susan Hill School of Dancing in Radstock. He then continued his training at the Royal Ballet School in London. Upon graduation in 2005, George went on to dance throughout Europe, joining the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam and later, the Dresden Semperoper Ballet in Germany, dancing as a soloist, as well as guesting in America and Asia.
McQueen runs at St James Theatre, London, from 12th May – 27th June.
