Midsomer Norton Station’s own little steam loco celebrated her 90th birthday last Sunday, 3rd December. Joyce’s ‘birth certificate’, aka works order, was dated August 1927, and as there was a four month delivery notice, she must have been completed and delivered in December.
Volunteers and visitors at the station celebrated with a cake, which was presented by Midsomer Norton Town Councillor, Gordon Mackay, who is a keen supporter of the Heritage Railway.
Santa and his elves were also there to help the celebrations – and then Joyce had to go back to work, pulling the lucky children who were visiting for the Santa Special.
Andy Chapman, Joyce’s driver and owner, was touched by the number of people who came to wish Joyce a Happy Birthday. There was a big crowd around the little Sentinel loco as she gave a blast on her whistle – and all the candles blew out!
Families who had brought their children to visit Santa and have a ride behind Joyce were able to sample all the other delights at the station. The Museum was open with a small model railway layout; the Shop was open for Christmas presents and with a lucky dip for the children. There was a children’s quiz around the site, and the signalbox was open for visitors.
All of this will be available for the next two Santa Specials on Sundays, December 10th and 17th. Joyce will be very pleased to see you!
