Ladies, do you have unwanted and unloved bras lingering at the back of your cupboard? Tranquil Fields, at Farrington Gurney, has registered to become a ‘bra bank’, with profits going back to the charity, Against Breast Cancer, which is dedicated to funding research to improve detection, treatment, and increase survival after a breast cancer diagnosis.
Surprised by the response so far, the team of therapists at Tranquil Fields have decided to keep the initiative going for the forseeable future – with some women bringing in bags of unwanted bras of all sizes and colours.
Annie Collins, from Tranquil Fields, explains: “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer, and we have a lot of female clients who visit; so for a while, we have been asking for a bra bank. Once it is full, we will send it off, but keep collecting, because we have had such a good response.”
Items from the bra bank are then sold to Africa, helping small businesses there to resell them at affordable prices for local women. Sarah Corcoran adds: “Whilst we might not think much of treating ourselves to a new bra, for some women in Africa they can be a luxury.
“It is a great initiative, as these are not items you can take to a charity shop. There is a problem with women accessing bras in Africa – it’s not just a vanity thing, it is a necessity, as living permanently without one can lead to health complications.”
Donations can be dropped off at Tranquil Fields, based at Farrington’s, whether it be a single bra or a bag of them. Why not have a look and see if there is an unwanted one at the back of a drawer that could go to someone in need and raise funds for a breast cancer charity at the same time?
