To mark the Queen’s 90th birthday, a nationwide celebration involving the simultaneous lighting of more than two hundred beacons will be taking place on the evening of Thursday, 21st April.
Westfield Parish Council and Midsomer Norton Town Council are working together to take part in the celebration and a large bonfire will be lit at Midsomer Norton Rugby Club – probably the highest point in the area, which should make it visible to other local events. The Councils want to make this a real community occasion and are working closely with the Rugby Club on the event.
Midsomer Norton Rugby Club have agreed to help by allowing the use of some of its land and will also be selling refreshments at the celebration, which will start from 7.45 p.m., with the bonfire being lit just before 8.30 p.m. Both Councils have also agreed to make a donation to the Rugby Club’s junior section, which draws its members from the whole of the Somer Valley area.
There will be ample parking for those who want to be part of this community occasion and both Councils have agreed to fund shuttle services for anyone who cannot reach the venue, running from 7.45 p.m. from the Methodist Church in Westfield and The Island in Midsomer Norton. For details and to book a space on one of the shuttles, you can contact Westfield Parish Council on: 01761 410669 or Midsomer Norton Town Council on: 01761 418701.
Peasedown St. John Parish Council will also be joining these celebrations by lighting a Beacon at Beacon Hall. The local primary school children will be involved in the celebrations by leading the singing of the National Anthem and a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’. Light refreshments will be served from 7 p.m. with the Parish Council asking people to arrive by 7.30 p.m. for the Beacon to be lit just before 8 p.m.
