The Chairman and committee thank all exhibitors, stallholders, family, friends and

everyone who gave their time and help to make the flower show, held on 20th August, a great day, despite the weather trying to wreck our efforts!

The saying Keep Calm and Carry On was very apt!

Chairman, Rob Langley, welcomed Alan Hale, Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council, to the Flower Show, he chatted to committee members and exhibitors before taking a look around the exhibits in the marquee.

Sorry to say, no medals were won due to the weather, as the decision was taken not go ahead with the Mini Olympics, the committee and the children were very disappointed, but despite the weather, the children were waiting between the rain storms for rides with Alan Davies on his miniature Steam Engine.

Rob Langley said although entry numbers were slightly down on last year, the judges had commented on the quality of the exhibits and that Writhlington can be proud with the standard of entries shown. The Chairman and the President, Mrs P. Gay, were both disappointed that the Flower Show had received no entries at all from younger children for the nursery or Pre-School classes, but the older children’s classes were well supported from St Mary’s School and children from the village – this made competition very keen and much harder for the exhibitors to win prizes.

The Writhlington Flower Show committee has a new Trophy, The Frank Millard Memorial Trophy for Runner Beans. This lovely trophy has been presented to the committee by Mrs M. Windle, who will be known by many of the older residents who live in the village, in memory of her father, a past Chairman of the Flower Show and a keen exhibitor. This will be a wonderful tribute to him and in the future this trophy will create its own history for the Flower Show and the younger generations of our village.

The Mendip Bee Keepers Association once again proved very popular. The Mendip Brass Band kept a lively atmosphere and played on, despite the weather, and lifted spirits. The Grand Draw was exceptionally busy, and extra hands were needed to cope with demand for tickets, all thanks to Mrs Brenda Fishers’ gift to the Flower Show of a print from one of her late husband, David Fishers’ paintings, which was won by Mrs Debbie Tutchell.

The Chairman welcomed Mr A. J. Charlton Snr to the Flower Show. Mr Charlton and his family have donated and supported the Flower Show for many years. Alongside our President, Mrs P. Gay, he presented the trophies and medals to the following: The Booth Cup for Fruit and Vegetables and a Whitstones Voucher, I. Chant. The Dick Price Cup for Best Exhibit, I. Chant. In the meantime, to raise funds for the Flower Show, the Committee will be holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday, 10th September, 11 a.m.– 1 p.m. at Writhlington Village Hall, jumble and bric-a-brac gratefully accepted.

Many Thanks to Becky and all at The?Journal for your support of Writhlington Flower Show.
