Did you guess the location of last week’s Mystery Photograph? We were in Midsomer Norton – and thank you to those of you who have submitted your fantastic competition photographs – there’s still time to enter if you would like to take your best shot of the scene!
Well done to Winston Eyles, Simon Chard, Paul Hancock, Les Box, Hannah and James Selway, Terry Reakes, Simon Ball, Sarah Brown, Andrea Potter, Andy Matthews, Neil Gillard, Joy Church, Frankie Ford, Rodney Gullick, Bob Ford, Keith and Lorraine Pursey, Gilmour Jones, Beryl Rhymer, Ivor Davis, Sue Granger, Elaine Bowen, Dan Clark, Andrew Thayer, Shirley Steel, Tony Cooper, Mike Ford and Martin Horler.
Thanks to Tony Cooper, Secretary of the Connaught Masonic Lodge, Midsomer Norton, who told us: “This week’s mystery photograph is of Shearn Bros. garage on the corner of Redfield Road and Church Lane, Midsomer Norton. Next to that is a house, which I believe was occupied by one of the Shearn brothers, and next to that, the Masonic Hall.
“The photograph must have been taken after 1912, for that was when the Masonic Hall was built. It was built on land sold by the Shearn family, for the magnificent sum of £57.
“The Masonic Hall was built by F. James and Son of Holcombe for £749.5s7d. The total cost of the development, including the land, was £914.10s.11d.
“The Masonic Hall remains to this day, and looks exactly the same as when it was first built. The garage and house were later demolished to make way for a bigger garage and car showroom. You can just see the corner of St. John’s churchyard in the right hand corner. I believe this photograph would have been taken from where the One Stop shop now sits.
If you think you know where this week’s ‘Then’ photograph may have been taken and would like a mention, email: [email protected] or send your answer to us via Facebook: @MNRJournal.
Answer next week!
