PUPILS from Farmborough Church Primary School were left inspired after a visit from medal-winning Paralympians.
Paralympic sprinter Katrina Hart, and Paralympic footballer Jack Rutter, led a fitness session for the whole school, getting pupils active with a series of fun circuits.
The visit continued with a whole-school assembly where Katrina shared her life story; born with cerebral palsy she explained how determination and hard work helped her achieve Gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 2012 Paralympics in London.
Jack was about to sign for Birmingham City in 2009 when he suffered an assault leading to brain damage. He captained Team GB at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
Pupils Poppy and Hannah said: “We enjoyed doing the circuits and hearing about how they became Paralympians and why they enjoy what they do. It was also pretty cool just to meet them.”
Pupils Erin and Nia added: “It was super cool, because we got to find out about their lives and do some fun activities.”
Katrina and Jack visited Farmborough Church Primary School as part of the Great Athletes programme, which brings elite athletes into primary schools across the UK to inspire young people to get active.
Teaching Assistant at the school, Mrs Johnson, added: “What stood out for me was hearing the advice Katrina had as a child to try as many sports as possible, find your local clubs and get involved.”
The visit left pupils feeling motivated and excited to try new sports, showing them that with perseverance and passion, big ambitions can start at primary school.
Great Athletes is a social enterprise with a mission to help children to be more physically active and is funded by visits to schools.
The social enterprise has helped schools raise more than £6,500,000 to promote physical activity and inspired more than 3 million children.
