MORE than a dozen local schools have taken up the offer of a reminder of the area’s mining heritage.

Somerset Miners Welfare Trust (SMWT) wrote to schools offering three feet tall ‘metal miners’ for free, to display anywhere on their grounds.

All schools that replied to the Trust will receive a metal miner to display in their grounds.

SMWT chairman Bryn Hawkins, treasurer Mo Duery, and trustee Selwyn Rees presented ‘miners’ to St Benedict’s Westfield, Trinity Radstock, St Marys Writhlington, Welton Primary Midsomer Norton, Norton Hill Juniors, and St John’s Chilcompton.

A further nine schools will be presented with their ‘miners’ in the next few weeks.

Nine more miners are due to be delivered to the remainder of schools that applied.

An SMWT spokesperson said: “This initiative is to broaden the knowledge of the coal mines’ local existence for young children after the seven-foot ‘miners’ installed around the area over the past two years.

“There are now over 40 in place.”
