A longstanding independent business in Midsomer Norton has announced it will close later this year marking the end of an era on the town’s High Street.

Out of Asia, a shop which has served the community for many years, shared the news in a heartfelt message posted publicly on Facebook.

The statement confirmed the business will cease trading in the autumn, with the owners describing the decision as a “deeply difficult one”.

The post read: “With great sadness, after many years, I have decided to close my business in the autumn of this year. I would like to thank all my loyal customers that have supported us for all these years through good times and bad times.”

The message was signed by both Karen and Lynne.

They both explained that trade had been steadily declining, a trend said has worsened following the introduction of parking charges in the town centre. She said the recently introduced parking charges had discouraged people from shopping locally. Many other independent traders in the area have also expressed their concern over the parking charges in recent months.

Out of Asia has been a familiar presence in Midsomer Norton, known for its distinctive stock and loyal customer base. While the exact closing date has not yet been confirmed, the news has already prompted a wave of comments from customers expressing sadness and gratitude on social media.

Karen and Lynne acknowledged the emotional weight of the decision, writing: “As you will all realise, this has not been an easy decision. So with heartfelt thanks...”

The closure adds to ongoing conversations around the health of the High Street, the challenges facing small businesses, and the broader impact of local policies such as parking fees.

The Midsomer Norton and Radstock Journal has tried to contact the owners for further comment.
