Midsomer Norton welcomed Writhlington Sports Trust to the town when it officially took over from Aquaterra Leisure last Wednesday, 1st July.
The centre, previously known as South Wansdyke Sports Centre, has been renamed as Midsomer Norton Sports Centre. By Friday of last week and within days of the Trust being in charge, the gym had received new flooring, a lick of paint and up-to-date fitness equipment.
Writhlington Sports Trust will now be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the building, the car park, Gullock Tyning toilets and the Somer Valley Skate, Adventure and Play Park.
The Trust is now in situ due to a Community Asset Transfer with B&NES Council. As part of this agreement, it will be spending significant sums of money on the building and will be encouraging the local community, groups and schools to get involved in sport, leisure and health. £180,000 has been spent on new fitness equipment, with a new fast track kiosk for workout classes and squash ticket collection. Future plans include improved access, a new lift to the first floor, refurbishment of the changing rooms, a new café, external decking, new fitness and toning studios and two new five-a-side artificial pitches.
